Software Developer Salary in India 2025: Real Numbers
The salary figures in this post come from real developer career stories published on developerstory, cross-referenced with data from Glassdoor India, Levels.fyi, and LinkedIn Salary Insights. Every named example links to the developer's full verified story on this site.
Most salary guides give you ranges like "₹4–15 LPA" and call it a day.
That's useless.
So instead of ranges, here are real numbers from real developers, with their exact salary at every stage, the moves that changed things, and what you can actually expect depending on where you are right now.
What Actually Determines Your Salary
Software developer salary in India in 2025 depends on four things more than anything else:
- Generalist vs specialist. Specialists earn 3–5x more.
- Service company vs product company. Product pays 2–3x more for the same skills.
- Indian client vs global client. Global pays 4–5x more.
- Years of experience vs actual skill level. These are not the same thing.
The same React developer earns ₹40K at an IT services firm and ₹2L at a US-funded startup. Same skills. Different context.
Salary by Experience Level: Real Numbers
Fresher / 0–1 Year (₹10K–₹40K/month)
This is the widest range of any stage. Which end you start on matters a lot.
Service company (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL):
- Package: ₹3.5–4.5 LPA (₹29K–₹37K/month)
- Reality: You spend 3–6 months in training before writing a single line of production code
- Growth: Slow. 10–15% hike per year if you stay
Early-stage startup:
- Package: ₹10K–₹25K/month (lower on paper)
- Reality: You write production code from week one
- Growth: Faster skill development, better foundation for future salary jumps
Mid-size product company:
- Package: ₹5–8 LPA (₹41K–₹66K/month)
- Reality: Competitive, usually requires strong DSA and system design basics
- Growth: Best of both worlds
Two developers who graduate the same year, with the same CGPA, can be earning ₹25K and ₹80K by year three. The difference is where they started and what they learned, nothing else.
I lived this. I turned down a ₹25K/month service company offer in 2018 to take a ₹10K/month startup internship. By year 4, I was earning 3x more than classmates who took the "safe" option. The full breakdown is in my story here.
Mid Level / 2–4 Years (₹40K–₹1.5L/month)
This is where most Indian developers get stuck.
You're earning ₹50–70K, it feels decent, you're comfortable. But peers who made different choices are already at ₹1.2L+.
What separates ₹50K developers from ₹1.5L developers at this stage:
| Factor | ₹50K Developer | ₹1.5L Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Company type | IT services | Product/startup |
| Tech stack | Legacy (Java EE, .NET) | Modern (React, Node, Go, Solidity) |
| Client | Domestic | Global/US |
| Specialization | Generalist | Beginning to specialize |
| Job switches | 0–1 | 1–2 strategic switches |
Revanth started at ₹10K/month in 2018. By year 3 he was at ₹45K. By year 7, after two strategic switches and consistent upskilling, he reached ₹2.57L/month at a US product company. The gap opened up at exactly this stage, years 2–4.
Senior Level / 5–8 Years (₹1L–₹3.5L/month)
At this stage, skills still matter but decisions matter more.
Developers earning ₹3L+ at this level have usually done one or more of these:
- Specialized in a high-demand niche (blockchain, AI/ML, cloud architecture, DevOps)
- Switched to a global remote role paying in USD/EUR
- Moved to a product company with ESOPs and better base pay
- Built a personal brand that brought inbound opportunities
Salary ranges at 5–8 years:
| Path | Monthly Salary |
|---|---|
| Senior dev at IT services company | ₹80K–₹1.2L |
| Senior dev at Indian product company | ₹1.2L–₹2L |
| Senior dev at MNC (Google, Microsoft, Amazon India) | ₹2L–₹4L |
| Senior dev in remote role (US/EU startup) | ₹2.5L–₹5L |
| Senior blockchain/AI specialist | ₹2L–₹4L |
In 2021, I was earning ₹45K as a generalist full-stack developer. I spent 4–5 months learning blockchain at night while still employed. Applied to 15 companies. Got 2 offers. Jumped to ₹80K immediately. One year later, a French startup called Ternoa found me on LinkedIn and offered ₹3.5L/month, a 4x jump in a single move. The full play-by-play is in my story.
8+ Years / Staff / Principal (₹2.5L–₹8L+/month)
At this level, salary varies widely. The range is ₹2.5L to ₹8L+ per month, sometimes at the same company on different teams.
FAANG India salaries (approximate 2025):
| Company | Senior SWE | Staff SWE | Principal SWE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google India | ₹3.5–5L/mo | ₹6–9L/mo | ₹10L+/mo |
| Microsoft India | ₹2.5–4L/mo | ₹5–7L/mo | ₹8L+/mo |
| Amazon India | ₹2L–3.5L/mo | ₹4–6L/mo | ₹7L+/mo |
These are base + variable. Total compensation including ESOPs can be 2–3x higher.
Salary by Tech Stack: What Actually Pays More in 2025
Not all skills are equal. Here's what the market pays in India right now:
| Tech Stack | Avg Salary Range | Market Demand |
|---|---|---|
| Blockchain / Solidity | ₹1.5L–₹4L/mo | High demand, very low supply |
| AI/ML Engineer | ₹1.2L–₹3.5L/mo | Very high demand |
| Cloud / DevOps (AWS, GCP) | ₹1L–₹3L/mo | High demand |
| Full Stack (React + Node) | ₹60K–₹2L/mo | High demand, high supply |
| Mobile (iOS/Android) | ₹70K–₹2L/mo | Medium demand |
| Java (enterprise) | ₹50K–₹1.5L/mo | Medium, declining |
| PHP / .NET | ₹30K–₹80K/mo | Low demand |
| Data Engineering | ₹1L–₹2.5L/mo | High demand |
Blockchain, AI/ML, and cloud pay more not because the work is harder but because fewer developers have those skills. Scarcity drives the premium.
The Remote Salary Arbitrage
A blockchain developer in France earns €6,000–8,000/month (₹5.5L–₹7.3L).
The same developer in India working remotely for that French company earns ₹3–4L/month, still 3–4x the Indian market rate, and cheaper for the employer than hiring locally in Europe.
This works with US companies, European startups (especially blockchain, fintech, SaaS), Australian tech companies, and Singapore-based product companies.
How to access it:
- Build 2+ years of solid, demonstrable experience first
- Specialize in a niche with global demand, not just domestic
- Build a visible GitHub profile and active LinkedIn presence
- Apply directly to remote-first companies, not just Naukri or LinkedIn India
Things Most Developers Learn Too Late
Job switching beats annual hikes every time. Annual hike at most Indian companies: 10–15%. Salary jump from one strategic job switch: 30–100%. Stay at the same company for 5 years with 15% hikes and you go from ₹50K to ₹1L. Switch twice in those 5 years with clear upskilling between switches and you could be at ₹1.8L+.
The first 3 years set your entire trajectory. The foundation you build in years 1–3, your skills, portfolio, and professional network, determines your ceiling at year 7. Two developers with the same starting point can be at ₹60K and ₹2L at the 7-year mark based purely on early decisions.
Skills matter more than degrees after year 2. After 2 years of experience, nobody asks about your CGPA or college. Your GitHub, your portfolio projects, and your ability to solve real problems are what matter.
Salary negotiation is a skill most developers never learn. Most developers accept the first offer. Developers earning at the top of every range negotiate from a position of leverage: competing offers, specialized skills, or existing income. One developerstory contributor added ₹8L to an annual package simply by having a competing offer and stating it calmly.
Where You Are and What to Do Next
| Where you are now | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| ₹10K–₹30K (fresher) | Learn one thing deeply. Build real projects. Don't stay in training mode. |
| ₹30K–₹80K (early career) | Start specializing. Research niches. Apply to product companies. |
| ₹80K–₹1.5L (mid career) | Target remote roles. Get competing offers before negotiating. Build in public. |
| ₹1.5L–₹3L (senior) | Consider entrepreneurship. Build consulting income. Think about equity. |
| ₹3L+ | You know what you are doing. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average software developer salary in India in 2025?
The average is ₹6–8 LPA for developers with 2–5 years of experience. The range is wide though, from ₹1.2 LPA for freshers at service companies to ₹50L+ total compensation at FAANG companies for senior roles.
What is the highest salary for a software developer in India?
Senior and staff engineers at Google, Microsoft, and Amazon India can earn ₹50L–₹1Cr+ per year in total compensation including base, variable, and ESOPs. Remote roles for global companies can also reach ₹40–60L/year for experienced specialists.
Which tech stack pays the most in India in 2025?
Blockchain/Solidity, AI/ML, and Cloud/DevOps consistently pay the most due to high demand and low supply of skilled developers. Blockchain specialists with 3+ years of experience regularly earn ₹1.5L–₹4L/month.
Does company type matter more than years of experience for salary?
Yes, significantly. A 3-year developer at a US-funded product company often earns more than a 7-year developer at a traditional IT services company. Company type, client base, and specialization matter more than raw years of experience past the 2-year mark.
How do Indian developers get remote jobs paying ₹2L+/month?
The most common path: build 2+ years of strong experience, specialize in a globally demanded skill (blockchain, AI/ML, cloud), build a visible GitHub and LinkedIn presence, and apply directly to remote-first companies abroad rather than only using Indian job portals.
